About

Richard Trafford:

Began martial arts in 1982 while at college, taking the first grades of the Korean martial art of ‘Tang Soo Do’, and then briefly in Shotokan karate.

Moving back to his hometown of Cheltenham in 1986, Richard joined the BAMA academy of martial artists, and has been training with them ever since where he achieved his first black belt in 1992.

With a passion for martial arts and fancying a change of career from running his own dental laboratory, Richard became a full time instuctor in martial arts in 1999, ever since then he has been successfully teaching clients in around Cheltenham, and is still very proud to be teaching some of his original students, some 14 years later!

“I love teaching and seeing the growth in others, and to me martial arts is a great vehicle for that, its not about the kicking and punching, but about the joy in discovering the inner meanings of the subject, and learning that there is so much to ourselves than we possibly knew!”

Richard was honoured to be awarded the grade of 4th Dan in the BAMA in 2005, then given the exciting opportunity to try new business ventures in martial arts he began ‘Wisewarrior Training’ with Tim Dickerson in March 2010  to, as he says; “find out where else this passion of teaching could take him!” now he humbly specializes and trains others in Japanese sword, Aikido and Eastern Philosophy.
